More Flexibility for Larger Solar Arrays

The 150V PV input limit allows more panels to be connected in series than with a 100V controller. Higher-voltage strings can reduce PV-side current and voltage drop, which is especially useful on cabins, trailers, boats and remote systems with longer cable runs.

Typical Solar Array Sizing


The SmartSolar 150/60-Tr can deliver up to 60A of charging current. Its nominal PV capacity increases with battery-bank voltage, making it particularly well suited to larger 24V and 48V systems.

These figures are the controller's nominal PV power ratings. Some array oversizing may be possible, but the complete array must always remain within the controller's voltage and current limits. The array's calculated cold-weather open-circuit voltage must remain below the absolute 150V maximum, and Victron specifies a 145V start-up and operating limit. Tr Screw-Terminal Connections


The Tr version uses heavy-duty screw terminals for both the PV input and battery output rather than factory-installed MC4 connectors. The terminals accept flexible, fine-stranded copper conductors up to 35mm² / 2 AWG.

This arrangement is useful when the controller is installed near breakers, combiner equipment or busbars, and it gives the installer flexibility to select cable sizes and termination methods appropriate for the system.

Tr Does Not Mean MC4

Solar-panel leads normally use MC4-style connectors, while this controller has bare-wire screw terminals. Suitable PV extension cable, disconnecting means and circuit protection may be required between the array and controller.

Battery Cable & Fuse Recommendations


At full output, the controller can supply 60A continuously to the battery bank. Short, properly sized battery cables help reduce voltage drop, heat and charging losses.

Protect the Battery Wiring

Victron specifies a 70A to 80A battery fuse for the SmartSolar 150/60. The final fuse and cable size must suit the conductor ampacity, cable length, installation method and applicable electrical requirements. Install the battery fuse close to the positive battery connection.

Flexible Battery Charging


The SmartSolar 150/60-Tr uses a multi-stage adaptive charging algorithm with pre-programmed profiles and user-adjustable settings. It can be configured for compatible LiFePO₄, flooded lead-acid, AGM and gel battery systems.

Battery voltage is automatically detected for 12V, 24V and 48V systems. A 36V battery bank is also supported but must be selected manually. Always confirm the charging parameters recommended by the battery manufacturer before commissioning the system.

Optional Wireless Battery Sensing

A compatible Victron Smart Battery Sense, BMV-712 or SmartShunt can share battery voltage and temperature information with the controller through VE.Smart Networking. This can improve charging accuracy when cable voltage drop or changing battery temperature is a concern.

VE.Direct, Remote On/Off & Programmable Relay


The integrated VE.Direct port allows the controller to connect to compatible Victron monitoring equipment such as a Cerbo GX. With an internet-connected GX device, solar production and system status can be monitored remotely through the Victron Remote Monitoring portal.

A two-pole remote on/off input allows external control by compatible equipment or control systems. The built-in programmable relay can be configured through VictronConnect for alarms or other system-control functions.

Remember the VE.Direct Cable

A VE.Direct cable is required to connect the SmartSolar directly to a Cerbo GX or MPPT Control display. The cable is sold separately and is available in multiple lengths.

Optional Local Display


For at-a-glance information without using a phone, the optional Victron SmartSolar Control display can be installed directly into the front of the controller. The display is sold separately and can be fitted or removed while the controller is operating.

Efficient, Fanless Operation


With up to 98% peak efficiency, the SmartSolar 150/60-Tr converts available solar energy into battery charging power with minimal loss. Natural cooling eliminates fan noise and reduces moving parts.

The controller can provide its full rated output at ambient temperatures up to 40°C. At higher temperatures, output may be reduced automatically to protect the controller.

Correct Installation Is Still Required

Built-in controller protection does not replace properly selected external wiring, fuses, disconnects or overcurrent protection. Solar and battery circuits must remain within the controller's published voltage and current limits.

Frequently Asked Questions


What does “Tr” mean?

The Tr model uses large screw terminals for the PV and battery connections. Solar panels with MC4-style connectors do not plug directly into the controller; the PV cable must be properly terminated at the controller or routed through suitable circuit protection or combining equipment.

Can I use residential solar panels with the SmartSolar 150/60-Tr?

Yes. The 150V input makes this controller a strong choice for series-connected residential-format solar panels, provided the complete array remains within the controller's voltage and current limits.

The calculated cold-weather open-circuit voltage must remain below the absolute 150V maximum and the 145V start-up and operating limit. The array's total short-circuit current must not exceed 50A. Panel specifications and the minimum expected local temperature must be considered before choosing the final wiring configuration.

Can I connect more than the nominal PV wattage?

Some array oversizing may be possible because the controller limits its charging output to 60A. However, the array must always remain within the controller's 150V absolute maximum open-circuit voltage, 145V start-up and operating limit and 50A maximum short-circuit current.

Oversizing should be evaluated using the actual panel specifications, array configuration, battery voltage and coldest expected site temperature.

Does the SmartSolar 150/60-Tr work with LiFePO₄ batteries?

Yes. It can be configured for compatible LiFePO₄ battery banks using VictronConnect. Select or create a charging profile that follows the battery manufacturer's recommended absorption voltage, float voltage and charging limits.

Any required low-temperature charge protection must be provided by the battery's BMS, a compatible external control system or suitable battery-temperature sensing and control.

Will it automatically detect my battery voltage?

The controller automatically detects 12V, 24V and 48V battery systems when the battery is connected first and the correct installation sequence is followed. A 36V battery system must be selected manually.

Does Bluetooth require an internet connection?

No. Your phone or tablet connects directly to the controller through Bluetooth for local setup, monitoring and history review.

Internet access may be required to download or update VictronConnect, but it is not required for normal local Bluetooth communication.

Can I connect it to a Cerbo GX for remote monitoring?

Yes. Connect the controller's VE.Direct port to a Cerbo GX using a compatible VE.Direct cable. When the Cerbo GX has internet access and is configured with Victron's VRM portal, the controller can be monitored remotely as part of the larger Victron system.

What size battery cable should I use?

Battery cable must be sized for up to 60A of continuous charging current while keeping voltage drop low. The controller accepts flexible, fine-stranded copper cable up to 35mm² / 2 AWG.

The correct conductor size depends on cable length, installation method, insulation temperature rating and applicable electrical requirements. Larger conductors are particularly helpful on 12V systems or longer cable runs.

What size battery fuse should I use?

Victron specifies a 70A minimum and 80A maximum battery fuse for the SmartSolar 150/60. The fuse must also be appropriate for the selected battery cable and should be installed close to the battery positive connection.

Can I install the controller outdoors?

The electronic components are rated IP43 and the connection area is rated IP22. This is not equivalent to a fully weatherproof outdoor enclosure.

Install the controller vertically in a dry, ventilated location protected from direct rain, water spray, condensation and excessive heat. Victron also requires clearance above and below the controller for natural cooling.
