Accurate Battery Monitoring Without a Separate Display
The Victron SmartShunt is a highly accurate battery monitor with built-in Bluetooth. It measures every amp flowing into and out of your battery bank, then calculates state of charge, power consumption, amp-hours used and estimated time remaining.
Instead of requiring a permanently mounted display, the SmartShunt connects directly to the free VictronConnect app on your phone or tablet. It can also connect to an optional Cerbo GX using a VE.Direct cable for centralized monitoring, alarms and remote access through the Victron VRM portal.
The 300A, 500A, 1000A and 2000A models provide the same Bluetooth monitoring, auxiliary input, VE.Direct connection and battery calculations. Choose the variant based on the maximum current that may pass through the shunt—not the battery bank's amp-hour capacity.

Know How Much Battery Power You Really Have
Battery voltage alone does not provide a dependable state-of-charge reading, particularly with LiFePO₄ batteries, which maintain a relatively flat voltage through much of their usable capacity.
The SmartShunt measures the current entering and leaving the battery and continuously calculates the remaining charge. Battery capacity, charge efficiency, Peukert characteristics and synchronization settings are used to provide a much more useful picture of the battery than voltage alone.

Choose the Correct Current Rating
The shunt rating must be based on the maximum combined current that could flow into or out of the battery bank. Battery capacity in amp-hours does not determine which model you need.

The selected shunt must accommodate the highest current expected in either direction. Consider inverter demand, motor-starting surges, alternator charging, solar charging, AC chargers and any future system expansion. The battery cables, terminals, busbars, fuses and disconnects must also be properly rated.
Bluetooth Monitoring with VictronConnect
Built-in Bluetooth connects the SmartShunt directly to the VictronConnect app. Your phone or tablet becomes the display, allowing you to view live battery information, review history, adjust settings, configure alarms and install firmware updates.

The SmartShunt does not include a separate panel-mounted display. Bluetooth monitoring through VictronConnect is built in and does not require an additional dongle for ordinary local use.
Add Cerbo GX & Remote VRM Monitoring
For centralized system monitoring, connect the SmartShunt's VE.Direct port to a Victron Cerbo GX. Battery information can then be displayed alongside compatible solar controllers, inverter/chargers, tank sensors and other equipment.
When the Cerbo GX has an internet connection, the free Victron Remote Monitoring portal can provide remote battery information, system history and configurable alarm notifications from virtually anywhere.
The Cerbo GX brings compatible Victron equipment together in one monitoring and control platform. Add a GX Touch display for local system information or connect through Remote Console and VRM from a phone or computer.
A VE.Direct cable is required to connect the SmartShunt directly to a Cerbo GX. The cable is sold separately and is available in multiple lengths from 0.3m to 10m.
Three Auxiliary Monitoring Options
The SmartShunt includes one configurable auxiliary input. This input can perform one of the following functions at a time:

The auxiliary input cannot monitor all three functions simultaneously. Temperature monitoring requires the optional sensor, which replaces the standard auxiliary voltage lead.
VE.Smart Wireless Data Sharing
The SmartShunt can share battery voltage, current and optional temperature information with compatible Victron products through VE.Smart Networking.
For example, a compatible SmartSolar charge controller can receive battery voltage directly from the SmartShunt rather than relying only on voltage measured at the controller. This can help the charger compensate for voltage drop in the charging cables. When the optional temperature sensor is installed, compatible chargers can also receive battery-temperature information.
VE.Smart Networking allows compatible products to exchange selected battery information wirelessly. It does not provide internet monitoring by itself. Remote VRM access requires a compatible GX device such as the Cerbo GX and an available internet connection.
Correct Installation Is Essential
The SmartShunt installs in the battery bank's negative connection. The battery negative connects to the shunt's battery side. Every charger, inverter, DC load and chassis-ground connection must be connected on the system side of the shunt.
This arrangement ensures that all charging and discharging current passes through the SmartShunt. If a load or charger is connected directly to the battery negative, that current bypasses the shunt and the state-of-charge calculation will be inaccurate.
Once installed, the SmartShunt should normally be the only connection to the battery bank's main negative terminal. All system-negative connections belong on the opposite side of the shunt, commonly through a properly rated negative busbar.
The included fused positive lead powers the SmartShunt and measures main-battery voltage. The second included fused lead can be used when the auxiliary input is configured for a second battery or midpoint measurement.
These standard SmartShunt models are rated IP21 and are not waterproof. Install the unit in a dry, protected location away from dripping water, condensation and battery fumes. Mounting screws and main battery cables are not included.
Battery Monitor or DC Energy Meter
In its normal battery-monitor mode, the SmartShunt measures the combined current entering and leaving the battery bank and calculates state of charge.
It can alternatively be configured as a DC energy meter to measure a particular charging source or load. Examples include an alternator, DC charger, wind generator, hydro generator or dedicated DC circuit. In DC meter mode, it measures voltage, current and power but does not operate as the main battery state-of-charge monitor.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I choose the correct amperage?
Choose the rating according to the highest current that may pass into or out of the battery bank. This includes inverter demand, charging current and any expected system expansion.
The rating is not based on battery capacity. A 100Ah battery can require a larger shunt than a 400Ah battery if it supplies a higher-power inverter.
Is the 300A version enough for my inverter?
It depends on the battery voltage, inverter output, efficiency and starting-surge requirements. Lower-voltage systems draw more battery current for the same AC load, so a powerful 12V inverter can require a larger shunt than a similar inverter operating from 24V or 48V.
The expected maximum current should remain within the selected shunt's rating with appropriate design margin.
Does it work with lithium batteries?
Yes. The SmartShunt works with LiFePO₄ and other compatible lithium battery systems. Battery capacity, charged voltage, discharge floor and synchronization settings should be configured for the installed battery.
It also works with AGM, gel and flooded lead-acid batteries.
Does it replace the battery's BMS?
No. The SmartShunt is a monitoring device. It measures battery current and calculates state of charge, but it does not replace the battery management system or provide the battery's primary over-voltage, under-voltage, over-current or temperature protection.
Does it include a display?
No separate display is included. Your phone or tablet acts as the local display through the VictronConnect app and the SmartShunt's built-in Bluetooth connection.
For a permanently mounted system display, the SmartShunt can connect to a Cerbo GX using a VE.Direct cable, with an optional GX Touch screen connected to the Cerbo GX.
Do I need a VE.Direct cable?
Not for ordinary Bluetooth monitoring. The SmartShunt connects directly to the VictronConnect app without an additional cable or dongle.
A VE.Direct cable is required when connecting the SmartShunt directly to a Cerbo GX or another compatible GX device. The cable is sold separately.
Can I monitor the battery remotely?
Bluetooth is intended for local monitoring within wireless range. For remote monitoring, connect the SmartShunt to a Cerbo GX using a VE.Direct cable. With an available internet connection, the Cerbo GX can send system information to Victron's VRM portal.
What can the auxiliary input monitor?
The auxiliary input can be configured to monitor the voltage of a second battery, the midpoint of a compatible series-connected battery bank or battery temperature using the optional Victron Temperature Sensor for BMV.
Only one auxiliary function can be used at a time.
Where is it installed?
The SmartShunt is installed in the main battery-negative connection. The battery connects to the shunt's battery-minus side, while all loads, chargers, inverters and system grounding connections connect to the system-minus side.
The standard SmartShunt is rated IP21 and must be installed in a dry, protected location.
Why must every negative connection pass through the shunt?
The SmartShunt calculates state of charge by measuring all current entering and leaving the battery. Any charger or load connected directly to battery negative bypasses the shunt, so that current is missing from its calculation.
When correctly installed, the shunt should normally be the only connection on the battery bank's main negative terminal.
What cables are included?
Two 1.5m red positive-sense cables with 1A fuses are included. One powers the SmartShunt and measures the main battery voltage. The other can be used for auxiliary battery or midpoint-voltage monitoring.
The heavy main battery cables, cable lugs, mounting hardware and VE.Direct communication cable are not included.
Does it have an alarm relay or buzzer?
No. The SmartShunt can generate configurable software alarms, but it does not have a built-in audible buzzer or programmable relay.
Alarms can be viewed in VictronConnect while connected. When the SmartShunt is connected to a Cerbo GX, alarms can also be integrated into the GX and VRM monitoring system.
Can it measure a solar controller or alternator separately?
Yes. The SmartShunt can be configured as a DC energy meter to measure a specific charging source or load, such as an alternator, solar controller, wind generator or dedicated DC circuit.
When configured as a DC meter, it measures that circuit's voltage, current and power instead of operating as the battery bank's primary state-of-charge monitor.
