Do MC4 connectors need a special crimp tool?

YES - MC4 connectors use a metal contact that must be crimped using the correct tools onto the solar cable conductor. A proper crimp creates a secure mechanical bond and a low-resistance electrical connection for reliable solar system performance.

Incorrect tools may appear to work, but risk poor connection with high heat.  This can lead to melting/damaged connections, and in extreme cases, fire.

Will this work with the MC4 connectors sold by Sapphire Energy?

Yes. This tool kit works with both the weatherproof MC4 connector sets and the genuine Stäubli MC4 connectors that we carry.

It also works with almost every other brand/type of MC4 connector on the market.

What wire sizes does this tool support?

This crimp tool is designed for common solar cable sizes including 2.5mm², 4mm², and 6mm² PV wire (roughly 14–10 AWG).

Do I need a ratcheting crimp tool?

Ratcheting crimp tools ensure the crimp cycle is completed before the tool releases. This helps produce consistent crimps and reduces the risk of loose electrical connections.

It also helps by holding the pin in place while you insert the conductor, before completing the crimp action.
