Long racking rails can be difficult or expensive to transport. Rapid 1 rails can be cut into shorter sections and then reconnected at the installation site using KJS2-MM rail joiners.
The final rail layout, joint locations and attachment spacing must still comply with the Kinetic Solar engineering and installation requirements.
Simple Side-Channel Installation
The joiner assembly slides into the side channel at the ends of the two rails being connected. Centre the joiner across the rail joint, align the rail sections and tighten both fasteners to the specified torque.
The KJS2-MM is intended for mill-finish Kinetic rails, including the mill-finish Rapid 1 rails sold by Sapphire Energy. When properly installed, it supports the approved bonding path between the connected rail sections.

What does a rail joiner do?
A rail joiner connects the ends of two solar racking rails. It keeps the sections aligned and allows multiple rail lengths to form a longer continuous run.
How many joiners do I need?
Use one KJS2-MM joiner at each Rapid 1 rail joint. Remember that a typical portrait panel row uses two parallel rails, so joining both rails at the same point normally requires two joiners.
How is the joiner installed?
Insert the joiner assembly into the side channel at the ends of the two rails. Centre it across the joint, align the rail sections and tighten both fasteners to 12 ft-lb (16.3 N-m).
Does it provide electrical bonding between the rails?
Yes. The KJS2-MM supports the bonding path between compatible mill-finish Kinetic rails when it is installed according to the K-Rack instructions.
The complete racking system must still include the required bonding clamps, grounding lug and equipment-grounding conductor.
Can I cut long rails for easier transportation?
Yes. A long aluminum rail can be cut into shorter sections for easier transportation and then reconnected at the installation site using KJS2-MM rail joiners.
Use suitable aluminum-cutting equipment, make clean square cuts and remove sharp edges and metal debris before assembly.
Where should I cut and join the rail?
If you are cutting a long rail for easier transportation, first work out where the rail and roof-mounting brackets will sit on the finished array. Choose a cut location that will place the joined section close to one of those roof attachments.
Avoid placing the joint in the middle of the largest unsupported space between roof attachments. You should also avoid positioning it directly underneath a panel mid clamp or end clamp, since you will need access to the rail channel and joiner bolts.
Make a clean, square cut, remove any sharp edges and bring the two rail ends tightly together. Centre the joiner across the joint so approximately half of the joiner sits inside each rail section, then tighten both bolts to 12 ft-lb (16.3 N-m).
For a simple rooftop installation, the general rule is: keep the joint close to a roof attachment, make sure both rail sections are properly supported and leave enough room to install and tighten the joiner.
Can it be used with another manufacturer's rail?
The KJS2-MM is designed for compatible Kinetic Solar rails. It should not be assumed to fit or provide an approved structural or bonding connection with another manufacturer's rail profile.
Should I use a joiner across an intentional thermal break?
No. A thermal break is intentionally left between rail sections to accommodate expansion. Kinetic requires the bonding path across a thermal break to be completed using ground lugs and an appropriately sized bonding conductor rather than a rigid rail joiner.
What warranty does this product include?
Kinetic Solar backs its K-Rack products with a 20-year limited manufacturer warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. Warranty coverage requires installation in accordance with Kinetic Solar's written instructions and engineering specifications.
