Kinetic K-Flash™ Deck-Mount Roof Attachment (KFLK-44S)
If you're investing in a rooftop solar array, the roof attachment is not the place to cut corners. The Kinetic K-Flash™ KFLK-44S is a premium flashed roof mount designed specifically for asphalt shingle solar installations, providing a clean, professional attachment point with excellent long-term leak protection.
Unlike basic roof mounts that depend heavily on sealants around exposed roof penetrations, the K-Flash uses a large integrated flashing that slides beneath the shingles and safely sheds water around the attachment point. It is one of the best waterproofing options available for shingled-roof solar installations.
This listing is for the KFLK-44S direct-to-deck version of the Kinetic K-Flash system. It includes four 1/4-inch × 2-inch self-drilling structural screws, allowing the mount to be positioned on suitable roof decking without requiring every attachment to line up directly over a roof truss.
The KFLK-44S uses four structural screws to distribute the attachment load across suitable roof decking. This provides greater flexibility when laying out solar rails because mounts do not normally need to be centred directly over roof trusses. Roof decking, design loads, spacing and local requirements must still be verified for the installation.
K-Flash combines a full flashing beneath the shingles with a raised sealant channel and a separate blind mounting stud. This design directs water around the attachment point while avoiding an exposed fastener through the top of the flashing.
Why You’ll Love It

Applications
- Residential rooftop solar systems
- Installations where roof mounts cannot all align with trusses
- Off-grid cabins and cottages
- Garages, workshops and outbuildings
- Tiny homes and accessory buildings
- Agricultural buildings
- Commercial rooftop solar arrays
- Retrofit installations on existing asphalt shingle roofs
What's Included
- One Kinetic K-Flash flashing
- One aluminum mounting baseplate with blind attachment stud
- Four 1/4" × 2" self-drilling structural screws
- Serrated flange nut
- Manufacturer-supplied hardware package
The KFLK-44S offers excellent layout flexibility, but the roof deck must still be capable of supporting the required loads. Mount spacing, decking material and thickness, local wind and snow loads, and applicable building requirements must all be considered when designing the array.
Frequently Asked
Frequently Asked
Does this mount need to land on a roof truss?
No. The KFLK-44S attaches directly to the roof deck using four 1/4-inch × 2-inch structural screws. This allows you to position the mounts where the rails need support instead of trying to line every mount up with a truss.
What type of roof deck can it attach to?
The KFLK-44S can be installed over continuous structural roof decking made from 7/16-inch OSB or better. It can also be used with equivalent or stronger plywood roof decking.
Do not attach it to damaged, rotten or badly delaminated roof sheathing.
Can I install it anywhere on the roof deck?
Almost. You do not need to find a truss, but all four screws must enter solid roof decking. Avoid unsupported sheathing edges, gaps between sheets, damaged decking, vents and other roof penetrations.
What's the difference between the KFLK-44S and KFLK-42S?
The difference is how they attach to the roof:
- KFLK-44S: Four 1/4-inch × 2-inch screws attach directly to suitable roof decking. It does not normally need to land on a truss.
- KFLK-42S: Two 5/16-inch × 4-inch lag bolts are intended to fasten into a truss, rafter or other structural roof member.
Choose the KFLK-44S when you want more freedom to position the mounts. Choose the KFLK-42S when the plans, engineer or local inspector specifically requires attachment to structural framing.
Can I mix this with the truss-mounted version?
Yes. The KFLK-44S deck-mount and KFLK-42S truss-mount versions can be used together in the same solar array.
For example, you can use KFLK-42S mounts where the rail crosses a convenient truss and use KFLK-44S mounts where the required attachment location falls between trusses. Both versions provide the same K-Flash mounting surface for the L-bracket, so the rail installs at the same height.
Keep the mount spacing within the allowable rail span for your local snow and wind loads, regardless of which attachment version is used at each location.
Can I space the mounts 48 inches apart?
Yes, the KFLK-44S can be positioned at 48-inch centres. However, the rail must also be rated to span 48 inches under the snow and wind loads at your location.
Mount spacing is measured along the rail. Do not exceed the maximum permitted span for the rail and local conditions.
Do I need to use all four screws?
Yes. The KFLK-44S is supplied as a four-screw deck-mount attachment. Use all four screws in the designated baseplate holes so the load is properly distributed across the roof deck.
Does it require roof sealant?
Yes, sealant is recommended as part of the K-Flash installation. Apply compatible roofing sealant beneath the flashing in the raised stamped channel surrounding the attachment area.
The flashing directs water around the mount, while the sealant provides a second layer of protection around the screw penetrations. Follow Kinetic's current installation instructions when applying it.
Why is the flashing installed underneath the shingles?
Installing the flashing beneath the upper shingles allows rainwater to flow over the flashing and continue down the roof. Water is directed around the screw penetrations instead of collecting against them.
This is more reliable than simply drilling through the shingles and covering the exposed fasteners with caulking.
Can it be installed on an existing shingle roof?
Yes. Carefully lift the shingles above the mounting location, fasten the baseplate to the roof deck, and slide the flashing beneath the upper shingles.
Replace any cracked, brittle or damaged shingles before installing the mount. The flashing should sit flat and allow water to drain naturally down the roof.
Do I need an L-bracket?
Yes. The KFLK-44S attaches to the roof, but an L-bracket is still required to connect the roof mount to the solar rail.
The KLB3-M L-Bracket Kit is the matching option we recommend for Rapid-1 rail.
Will it work with Rapid-1 rail?
Yes. Install the KLB3-M L-Bracket on the threaded stud above the flashing, then attach the Rapid-1 rail to the L-bracket using the included rail hardware.
