The BlueSolar and SmartSolar 100/20 provide the same core voltage and charging capacity, but the SmartSolar version adds built-in Bluetooth for easy setup, live monitoring and solar-production history through the VictronConnect app.

Solar Charging Across Four Battery Voltages

Unlike many compact 20A charge controllers, the BlueSolar 100/20 can be used with battery banks from 12V through 48V. It is one of Victron’s smaller options for maintaining or solar charging a modest 48V battery system.

A compatible 36V battery voltage can also be configured manually. Victron does not publish a separate nominal PV wattage for 36V systems.

Check Both PV Voltage and Current

The complete solar array must remain below the controller’s 100V maximum open-circuit voltage and 20A maximum PV short-circuit current. Solar-panel voltage rises in cold weather, so the array’s temperature-corrected Voc must remain below 100V during the coldest expected conditions.

Optional Monitoring and Configuration

BlueSolar models do not include built-in Bluetooth, but the integrated VE.Direct port provides several options for configuring, monitoring or integrating the controller:

  • Add a VE.Direct Bluetooth Smart dongle for wireless VictronConnect access
  • Connect to a computer using a VE.Direct-to-USB interface
  • Connect to a Cerbo GX or compatible GX device using a VE.Direct cable
  • Use a compatible wired Victron MPPT Control display

With a suitable interface, VictronConnect can display live solar and battery information, daily production history, charging settings, load-output operation, warnings and diagnostic information.

Programmable Load Output

The BlueSolar 100/20 includes a dedicated load output that can power suitable DC equipment while helping protect the battery against excessive discharge. The output can disconnect loads at a selected low-voltage threshold or use Victron’s BatteryLife algorithm to adjust operation based on recent solar-charging performance.

Do Not Connect an Inverter to the Load Output

Inverters and other high-current equipment should normally connect directly to the battery through appropriately sized cable, fusing and switching. The load terminals are intended for suitable DC loads within the applicable current rating.

Battery Setup and Configuration

The BlueSolar 100/20 automatically detects a 12V, 24V or 48V battery system during its first power-up. A 36V battery voltage must be configured manually.

Changing the battery preset, selecting a lithium charging profile or creating custom charging settings requires access through the controller’s VE.Direct port. This can be done using a VE.Direct Bluetooth Smart dongle, a VE.Direct-to-USB interface or an optional MPPT Control display.

Configuration Access Is Required

The BlueSolar 100/20 does not have a physical battery-type selector. If the factory settings are not appropriate for your battery, a compatible VE.Direct interface or MPPT Control display is required to select the correct charging profile before use.

Efficient, Fanless Operation

With peak conversion efficiency of up to 98%, the BlueSolar 100/20 converts available solar energy into battery charging power with minimal losses. Natural convection cooling eliminates fan noise and reduces the number of moving parts in the installation.

The controller can provide its full rated output at ambient temperatures up to 40°C. At higher temperatures, charging current may be reduced automatically to protect the controller.

How do I select the correct battery type?

The BlueSolar 100/20 does not have a physical battery-type selector. Selecting a factory battery preset, lithium profile or custom charging settings requires a VE.Direct Bluetooth Smart dongle, a VE.Direct-to-USB interface or an optional MPPT Control display.

The controller automatically detects a 12V, 24V or 48V battery system during its first power-up, but voltage detection does not select a battery-specific charging profile. A 36V system must also be configured manually.

If you want to configure the controller directly from a phone without purchasing another accessory, the SmartSolar 100/20 includes Bluetooth.

What is the difference between BlueSolar and SmartSolar?

The main difference is Bluetooth. The BlueSolar 100/20 does not have Bluetooth built in, while the SmartSolar 100/20 can connect directly to a compatible phone or tablet through the VictronConnect app.

Both versions provide the same core 100V PV input rating, 20A charging capacity, battery-voltage support and VE.Direct connection. The BlueSolar is a good choice when Bluetooth is not needed or when the controller will be connected to a Cerbo GX. Bluetooth can also be added later using an optional VE.Direct Bluetooth Smart dongle.

If you want simple phone-based setup, live monitoring and history without purchasing another accessory, choose the SmartSolar version.

Can I monitor the BlueSolar 100/20 from my phone?

Yes, but an optional VE.Direct Bluetooth Smart dongle is required. The dongle connects to the controller’s VE.Direct port and allows a compatible phone or tablet to communicate through the VictronConnect app.

If you want Bluetooth included without a separate dongle, the SmartSolar 100/20 is the better choice.

Can it connect to a Cerbo GX?

Yes. The BlueSolar 100/20 has a VE.Direct port and can connect to a compatible Cerbo GX using a separately purchased VE.Direct cable.

Its solar-production and charging information can then appear in the GX interface and, when properly configured, the Victron VRM remote-monitoring portal.

Can it charge a 48V battery?

Yes. The BlueSolar 100/20 supports 48V battery banks and can provide up to 20A of battery charging current. Victron lists a nominal PV capacity of approximately 1160W when used with a 48V battery system.

The solar array must provide enough operating voltage to charge the battery while remaining below the controller’s 100V maximum PV open-circuit voltage. This creates a relatively narrow design window, so the individual panel specifications and cold-weather voltage must be checked carefully.

Can it charge a 36V battery?

Yes. A compatible 36V system voltage can be manually configured through the controller settings. It should not be assumed that the controller will automatically recognize a 36V battery during initial installation.

Configure the controller before connecting the solar array and confirm that the panel arrangement provides sufficient charging voltage without exceeding the 100V PV limit.

Can it charge lithium batteries?

Yes. The BlueSolar 100/20 can charge compatible LiFePO₄ batteries when the appropriate charging profile and voltage settings are selected.

Use the settings recommended by the battery manufacturer. Any required low-temperature charging protection must be supplied by the battery’s BMS or another suitable control system.

Can I connect more than the nominal solar wattage?

Some array oversizing may be possible because the controller limits its battery charging output to 20A. However, the array must always remain below the controller’s 100V maximum open-circuit voltage and 20A maximum PV short-circuit current.

Regularly installing substantially more solar than the controller can use may provide little additional benefit. Contact us with the panel specifications, battery voltage and proposed wiring arrangement if you would like the configuration checked.

What is the load output used for?

The programmable load output can power suitable DC loads and disconnect them when battery voltage becomes too low. It is rated for up to 20A on 12V and 24V systems, but only 1A when the controller is configured for a 36V or 48V battery.

Do not connect an inverter or other high-current appliance to the load output. These devices should connect directly to the battery through properly sized wiring and overcurrent protection.

What size battery cable and fuse should I use?

The controller accepts flexible copper conductors up to 6mm² or approximately 10 AWG. Cable size must account for charging current, circuit length, installation conditions and applicable electrical requirements.

Victron specifies a battery fuse between 25A and 30A. Install the fuse close to the battery’s positive connection and ensure its rating properly protects the installed cable.

Can I install the controller outdoors?

The electronic components are rated IP43 and the connection area is rated IP22. This is not equivalent to a fully weatherproof outdoor enclosure.

Install the controller vertically in a dry, ventilated location protected from direct rain, water spray, condensation and excessive heat. Leave adequate clearance above and below it for natural cooling.

What warranty does this product include?

The BlueSolar MPPT 100/20 is backed by Victron Energy’s 5-year limited warranty, providing substantially longer coverage than many basic solar charge controllers.
