Typical Solar Array Sizing
The SmartSolar 75/15 is designed for compact solar arrays on 12V and 24V battery systems.

These figures are general sizing guidance. The correct solar array depends on battery voltage, individual panel specifications, wiring configuration, installation location and minimum expected temperature. The array's cold-weather open-circuit voltage must remain below the controller's 75V maximum, and total PV short-circuit current must remain within its 15A rating. Solar-panel open-circuit voltage increases as temperature falls. The complete array's temperature-corrected Voc must remain below 75V during the coldest expected conditions—not only under the panel's standard test conditions.
Battery Cable & Fuse Recommendations
Short, properly sized battery cables help reduce voltage drop, heat and charging losses. The SmartSolar 75/15 accepts conductors up to 6mm² (10 AWG), which is the maximum cable size that will physically fit its power terminals.

Victron suggests a battery fuse in the 20A to 25A range for the SmartSolar 75/15. The final fuse must also be appropriately selected to protect the installed battery cable and comply with applicable electrical requirements.

Programmable Load Output
The SmartSolar 75/15 includes a dedicated 15A load output for suitable small DC loads. It can automatically disconnect the load when battery voltage becomes too low, helping protect the battery from excessive discharge.
Load-output behaviour can be configured through VictronConnect. Victron's intelligent BatteryLife mode can also adjust the disconnect threshold based on the battery's recent state of charge and the amount of solar energy available.
Inverters and other high-current equipment should normally be connected directly to the battery through appropriately sized cable, fusing and switching. The controller's load terminals are intended for suitable DC loads drawing no more than 15A.
VE.Direct Connectivity
The integrated VE.Direct communication port allows the SmartSolar 75/15 to connect with compatible Victron monitoring equipment, including Cerbo GX systems, VE.Direct USB interfaces and other supported accessories.
This makes it easy to include the controller in a larger Victron installation with centralized system monitoring, historical data and remote access through compatible GX equipment.

Flexible Battery Charging
The SmartSolar 75/15 uses a multi-stage adaptive charging algorithm and can be configured for a wide range of battery systems. Charging parameters can be adjusted through VictronConnect, or one of the available pre-programmed charging profiles can be selected.
This flexibility makes the controller suitable for properly configured LiFePO₄, flooded lead-acid, AGM and gel battery systems. Always follow the charging recommendations provided by the battery manufacturer.
A compatible Victron Smart Battery Sense or BMV-712 Smart Battery Monitor can transmit battery voltage and temperature data to the controller through Victron's wireless network. This can improve charging accuracy when voltage drop or changing battery temperature is a concern.
Efficient, Fanless Operation
With a maximum conversion efficiency of up to 98%, the SmartSolar 75/15 converts available solar energy into battery charging power with minimal losses. Its fanless design also eliminates fan noise and reduces the number of moving parts in the installation.
The controller can provide its full rated output current at ambient temperatures up to 40°C. At higher temperatures, output may be reduced automatically to protect the controller.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a 220W solar panel with this controller?
Yes. A compatible 220W panel is an excellent nominal match for the SmartSolar 75/15 on a 12V battery system. The Lumera 220W Flexible Solar Panel is particularly well suited to marine and mobile applications.
Compatibility still depends on the panel's Voc, cold-weather corrected Voc and short-circuit current. The panel must remain within the controller's 75V maximum PV voltage and 15A maximum PV short-circuit current.
Can I connect more than 220W on 12V or 440W on 24V?
Some array oversizing may be possible because the controller automatically limits its charging output to 15A. However, the array must always remain within the controller's 75V maximum open-circuit voltage and 15A maximum short-circuit current.
Regularly connecting substantially more solar than the controller can use may produce little additional benefit. A larger controller may be a better choice for a higher-powered array.
Can it charge lithium batteries?
Yes. The charging settings can be configured for a compatible 12V or 24V LiFePO₄ battery through the VictronConnect app.
Use the charging voltages recommended by the battery manufacturer and confirm that any required low-temperature charging protection is provided by the battery's BMS or another suitable control method.
Does Bluetooth require an internet connection?
No. Your phone or tablet connects directly to the controller through Bluetooth for local setup, monitoring and history review.
Internet access may be required to download or update the VictronConnect app, but it is not required for normal local Bluetooth communication.
What is the load output used for?
The programmable 15A load output can power suitable small DC loads and disconnect them if battery voltage becomes too low. Its behaviour can be configured through VictronConnect or managed using Victron's BatteryLife mode.
Do not connect an inverter or another high-current appliance to the load output. These loads should be connected directly to the battery through appropriately sized cable and overcurrent protection.
Can it connect to a Cerbo GX?
Yes. The controller includes a VE.Direct port and can connect to a compatible Cerbo GX using a separately purchased VE.Direct cable.
This allows its solar production and charging status to be incorporated into a larger Victron monitoring system. Remote monitoring is also available when the GX system is properly connected to the internet and configured with the Victron VRM portal.
What size battery cable should I use?
For a typical full-output installation, short runs of 6mm² (10 AWG) fine-stranded copper cable are recommended. This is also the largest conductor size accepted by the controller's power terminals.
Cable requirements may vary with run length, installation method, conductor temperature rating and applicable electrical requirements.
What size fuse should I use?
Victron specifies a 20A to 25A battery fuse for the SmartSolar 75/15. The fuse should be installed close to the battery positive connection.
The final fuse rating must also protect the installed cable and comply with the requirements of the installation.
Will it charge a completely discharged battery?
The controller includes a deeply discharged battery recovery function and can begin charging from very low battery voltage when sufficient solar input is available.
It can also reconnect to some lithium batteries whose internal BMS has disconnected the cells. Recovery still depends on the battery design, BMS behaviour and the condition of the battery.
Can I install the controller outdoors?
The electronic components are rated IP43 and the connection area is rated IP22. This is not equivalent to a fully weatherproof outdoor enclosure.
Install the controller in a dry, ventilated location protected from direct rain, water spray, condensation and excessive heat.
